OPEN SOURCE MONSTER 12

Good morning. How's summer treating you? If you're in the U.S. I hope that you're all set for a short holiday week. For now, I thought I'd get you all set with a new Open Source Ink Blot.

If you're a monster first-timer, don't be shy! Here's how it works: Download OPEN SOURCE INK BLOT 12, print it out, and have at it in any way you like: Draw, paint, origami, film, or sculpt. Just scan or photograph the result and send it my way at opensource@344design.com and I'll put the result on the blog right here.

Below are some excellent monsters that sprang from Blot No.11. I hope they'll inspire you. And please don't be intimidated by any of the work. Some of the people posting are trained professionals, but you certainly don't have to be! Some of the most fearsome beasts have come from people who haven't used a pen for anything but phone doodles in years. As long as you have fun, you'll end up with a fun creature!

MONSTER QUILT SOLD TO HIGHEST BIDDER

Good evening. A quick update with the result of the Monster Quilt Auction: Annie Nordmarks' fabulous Monster Quilt has found a new home with a friend of the Daily Monster who also happens to be a quilter and an active supporter of the Alzheimer's research effort. Talk about a perfect match. So... now... who'll come up with the next monstrous object d'art?

Good morning. Emily Wong shines with new Open Source Monsters and very politely reminded me that she had sent another that I had forgotten to post. My apologies, Emily! And to all of you! Here are Emily's latest masterpieces based on blots 8 through 11.

I don't know if you know this: Emily posts step-by-step instructions for her illustrations at her own blog Ninja vs Penguin, so you can follow along with her process. With all the work going through here the past few weeks I've been utterly remiss in giving you some new ink to play with. Well, no more! Here is Blot 11. SIGN OF LIFE

Good morning! Please forgive me for being incommunicado for the past week and a half. I've been press-checking the new David Hockney catalog for the past week and a half, which has kept my days a bit fragmented. In the chunks of time between runs, the approval process for the Monster Book spreads has been dragging on a bit, so I've been doggedly pursuing solutions to the various concerns. The UCLA Extension Cover needed a very skinny little monster for the spine. Lastly, I also had to fulfill the first orders coming in from STORE 344.

You sent in some cool new Open Source Monsters and Tallest Monster segments. I'll post them very soon. Along with a new Weekly Monster! Please stay tuned and please don't doubt that 344 LOVES YOU
